Dear Friends,
Summer in church life always seems to go one of two ways. For some, it is one of the busiest times of the year with holiday clubs, family events and all the extra activity that comes with children being off school. For others, it is a quieter stretch, as many people head away and the rhythm of church life slows. For me, it has been a mixture of both.
One of the things I particularly value about this season is the opportunity it gives to focus on children and young people. In our church, the summer break often means fewer activities for them, so our team makes the most of the chance to pour into their lives. This year, one of our volunteers spent weeks crafting a cardboard jukebox for the children's work. It was brilliant, chaotic and a lot of fun. But more than that, it reminded me what a joy it is to be able to share God's Word and His love with the next generation.
As we move into autumn, I find myself grateful for what has been and expectant for what is ahead. A new term brings new opportunities to serve, to plan, and to build. Many of us know that church life does not really run on a school calendar, yet September often feels like a fresh start. It is a time to set vision, to invest in teams, and to prepare for what God has in store.
That thought of investment is an important one. Just as we invest in the next generation, we also need to consider how we are investing in ourselves and our ministries. Perhaps this new season is a moment to pause and ask: how am I growing in my calling as a church administrator or manager? What could I do to strengthen the work God has entrusted to me?
At UCAN, we are passionate about equipping you in that journey. Later in this newsletter you will read about our accredited training opportunities, designed to help you build both skill and confidence for the challenges of church leadership and administration. These courses are a practical way to invest in yourself and, in turn, to bless the churches and communities you serve.
As the psalmist writes, "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom" (Psalm 90:12). My prayer is that this season would be one where each of us seeks that wisdom afresh, leaning on God's grace and equipping ourselves for the work He has called us to.
With every blessing,
Gavin Smith
