Supporting Mission: Practical Guidance for Church Administrators
At our March Virtual Roundtable, we were joined by a representative from SOMA UK who shared valuable insights into the operational side of mission work. Their reflections were a timely reminder that the Great Commission to "go into all the world" involves not only sending and supporting people, but also ensuring that our structures, governance and stewardship are sound.
This article highlights areas for administrators to consider when supporting mission, whether at home or abroad. It is not an exhaustive checklist, but a practical starting point for strengthening your church's approach.
Financially Supporting Mission Work
Let's consider four topics, Structure, Accountability, Interdependency and Good Stewardship.
Structure: Clear structures protect both your church and your mission partners. The Charity Commission provides firm guidance on working with partners and it's no longer sufficient to rely solely on personal trust or long-standing relationships.
A simple partnership agreement should outline:
· How funds may be used
· Reporting and accountability expectations
· Safeguarding responsibilities
· Review periods
· Alignment in theology and practice
· What happens if difficulties arise
If you already support mission partners without such an agreement, it's not too late, consider putting one in place retrospectively.
Accountability: Set out clear reporting expectations from the outset. Ask for documentation showing how funds are used and keep records on file. Be especially vigilant when working in countries where the risk of fraud is higher. The UK Government publishes a list of high‑risk jurisdictions, which is worth consulting as part of your due diligence.
Interdependency: Healthy mission partnerships are two‑way. Consider how your relationship can avoid creating dependency and instead foster mutual learning, shared prayer, and reciprocal encouragement.
Good Stewardship: Mission support should not be open ended. Build in review points to assess:
· Whether the partnership is still aligned with your church's vision
· Whether risks have changed
· Whether the partner's direction or circumstances have shifted
Good stewardship means being willing to pause, reshape, or conclude support when necessary.
Going on Mission
The SOMA UK representative at our training produced a helpful guide for churches preparing for mission trips abroad. Although written with international mission in mind, many of the principles apply equally to UK based mission activities. You can access the document HERE.

It's also worth taking a moment here to consider 'Gift Days' and the financial implications when raising funds for other organisations, ensuring generosity is combined with regulatory compliance, read more about this in Stewardship's recent blog post.
